Acqusition
February 8, 2006, 3:43 am | 14 Comments
Hello dear friends. You might have already guessed whats going on from the title. Yes, Pingoat (along with Splogspot) is soon going under an acqusition. This is not a 'multi million dollar' acqusition, but the whole of Pingoat and Splogspot is getting acquired for an undisclosed amount.
I will hang around here, looking after the technical stuff for some time.. I am really sad to let Pingoat go and I am going to miss you all.
I'll keep you posted. ;(

Moving... !
November 13, 2005, 9:41 am | 167 Comments
Finally, a good and powerful server (stable) where Pingoat can live and play peacefully. Thanks to Advantage Consulting Services - http://acsseo.com for the server.
So now, Pingoat is being moved to the new server. It might take a few hours before the migration completes. You MIGHT experience certain technical problems in this process. I'll post an update once the transfer is completely done.

For about three days, Pingoat has been experiencing critical technical issues as the DoS attacks continued to hit hard. And to make things worse, I was out of town and never actually got time to get online, so I never knew what was happening. Apparently, the database somehow got corrupted during the attack.
Anyway, things are Ok and running smooth now. I'll be keeping an eye on the server 24x7, so hope we get no more performance issues.
I apologise for the inconvenience caused. Sorry.

DDoS attacks !
October 28, 2005, 2:00 pm | 14 Comments
Finally, a nightmare coming true. As you might have noticed, the whole server was down for hours today. The CPU load was running high like anything. I investigated, only to find that the server was being hit by DDos attacks.
You might find the server down during this period. Please bear with me.
Thank you.

Recently updated blogs
October 20, 2005, 2:40 pm | 12 Comments
A lot of people have been complaining that the "Recent pings" page isn't working properly. So I've open a "Recently updated blogs" page - http://recent.pingoat.com . This page shows 500 of the last updated blogs (An xml feed is available)
When compared to the "Recently updated splogs" (http://splogspot.com/recent), this list updates very slow!

SplogSpot
September 26, 2005, 9:55 pm | 15 Comments
I would like to announce the opening of my latest project, SplogSpot.com. Its as crazy as it sounds

What is splogspot
SplogSpot is just a piece of software that feeds on Pingoat's blacklist database. It is the service designed to make Pingoat's blacklist database public. With the Splogspot API, anyone can query Pingoat's blacklist database. So if you are starting a blog aggegator or something, or even a blog directory, use SplogSpot's api to keep your sites clean!
Why a SPLOG search!
Splog Search is just a silly cosmetic addon. Just for fun. The core idea is still making the pingoat's blacklist database publicly accessible.
The Splogspot website : http://splogspot.com
Stats
Now a bit of Pingoat stats. Since July 22, Pingoat processed more than 1103663, yes, more than 1 million pings! But the interesting part is not that. Out of these one million+ pings, only around 63,601 were actually served. The rest were rejected either due to spam/high frequency pings.
And also, the time-restriction between the pings has been reduced to 1 hour from 2 hours

Pingoat just grew bigger!
September 18, 2005, 5:34 pm | 8 Comments
Yes, Pingoat just underwent a major upgrade and obviously, just gew bigger
Added support for weblogUpdates.extendedPing
Checkout http://pingoat.com/goat/rpc_help for technical details
Now you can pass your blog's rss feed in the ping to the services that support this method (Pubsub, blo.gs etc..) A field for the RSS url has been added on the homepage
New services
- Planetoftheblogs.com
- Gen.nz
- Longrank.com (currently under development. Service opens soon)
- iPodder.org
- And as some of you might have already seen, Blogexplosion has launched the "PingMyBlog" tool which is powered by our own Pingoat - http://blogexplosion.com/pingmyblog
- Pingoat on LockerGnome - http://channels.lockergnome.com/windows/archives/20050914_pingoat.phtml
PS: I read somewhere that Pingoat is trying to exagerrate its services by including low-quality services and emphasising quantity instead of quality. But the truth is that Pingoat = Quality+Quantity
And Pingoat was never opened for "competition". I believe in what we usually call "Survival of the fittest"

Bad news!
September 4, 2005, 3:34 pm | 10 Comments
This really makes me sad
I'm taking down 10 services from the Ping list. We now have 50 services only
A couple of services are dead, another couple (foreign) blocked has Pingoat. I couldnt find a "contact page" on their website as I cant read Japanese and for some reason, the translation didnt reveal and contact links.
And the rest of the services, well they shut down because of SPAM abuse
They are not accepting pings from anywhere because of spam abuse. I have mailed them asking whether they could open their services to Pingoat offering them a no-spam guarantee. Not sure how they'll respond.
Removed services
datashed.net
blogsnow.com
snipsnap.org
lasermemory.com
myblog.jp
logoole.com
thingamablog.sourceforge.net
xmlrpc.blogg.de
blog.goo.ne.jp
blog.rank10.net
blog.with2.net
ping.exblog.jp

Blacklisted?
August 31, 2005, 1:14 am | 16 Comments
Today, while doing a minor security upgrade, Pingoat banned all sites that tried to ping. Sorry about that
But in that five minutes, I got around 200 emails complaining and I had to reply to all of them!
If you have a real good blog and you get a "blacklisted" warning, it might be because of pure computer miscalculations! Please understand that the software might sometimes blacklist innocent blogs.
No need to panic, just drop me a mail and I'll clear you off. After all, I am a single person with only two hands! As you see, Pingoat is still "beta", that means its still in development mode. Once its out of the beta, you'll enjoy continuous, clutterless service. Till then, please bear with me
Thank you for your co-operation.

Big events !
August 30, 2005, 3:02 pm | 13 Comments
Since yesterday's security upgrade, a lot of things have been happening around here. The first this is that I see a huge dip in spam
Out of every 1000 pings served, only around 10 or 20 are spam. I know that this is temporary, but Pingoat'll do its best to kill spam.
Threats
Regardless the many a number of 'thank you' mails I received yesterday, there were a dozen 'threats' too
Obviously they were spammers?? One said that Pingoat should learn to serve 'all kinds of blogs' else it wont go very long. But I am really sorry. Pingoat wont process blogs that are spam.
If by any chance, you get a 'black listed' or 'trying to spam' warning while pinging your good and clean blog, drop me a mail and the issue will be resolved very immediately. Please remember that Pingoat is still in beta and it might have glitches !
Thank you.

August 20, 2005, 12:43 am | 20 Comments
I am happy (again) to announce the addition of around 10 new services! This time, every service has been categorised properly. "General / Non english services / Special services".
Now Pingoat supports a decent 64 services
Edit
Just wanted to add a little statistics
Pingoat received over 10,0500 pings since July 21. Out of this, only 13800+ pings were served. The rest were SPAM :| Something really needs to be done regarding this spam. (I'm working on a paper now 'How to prevent blog spam' )

Pingoat enters phase 2 !
August 6, 2005, 12:54 pm | 6 Comments
Pingoat enters phase two ! Yep, the Pingoat engine has been fully revamped for better performance. The new system can ping services via xml-rpc format, or a simple get/post or even a custom method! Now all I need to do to add a new service is to add its url, specify the ping method (with optional variables like port, vars, type etc..)! Its that easy ! So please keep your eyes open for new services and do let me know
And functionality wise, there's been two MAJOR improvements.
1) Added a 'Select all' button
2) The ping submission on the homepage is now via 'get' method. That means you can bookmark the ping page (after submission) and ping when ever you want, by calling the bookmark !
3) Arranged the service list into three columns for better accessbility
4) Pingoat remembers your blog name/url and the services you pinged
A couple of non-functional ping services have been removed and in compensation, these new services has been added
1.IceRocket.com
2.newsisfree.com
3.Weblogs.com Audio RPC (for podcasters)
4.boastology.com/recent
Newsgator rpc server seems to have some problems, but I hope the very friendly Newsgator man, Greg Reinacker will soon sort them out for Pingoat.
And I've compiled a small list of Blog directories and search engines where you can submit your blog (one time submission). It can be found here : http://pingoat.com/goat/resources
Enjoy! And please do report errors and glitches you find..
